In the late 18's and early 19 century American settlers pushed westward through the Appalachian Mountains. The Indians were forced to large swaths of their country. Tecumseh, the son of a Shawnee chief believed that if he had a great union of Indian tribes, the settlers could could be stopped.
Tecumseh was about 1768 near what is now born in Springfield. Ohio. As a young man he fought with courage in the border dispute against the white settlers. He and his brother, known as the Prophet,Growing up white men hate and fear their influence on the ancient Indian culture. Tecumseh and his brother urged people on the road to honor their fathers and rejecting the advances of a new civilization.
During this time, William Henry Harrison, the former governor of Indiana Territory, organized a series of contracts with some of the Indian chiefs. These contracts for the U.S. control over vast areas made available. Tecumseh believed that the country belonged to all Indians andmay be transferred only if agreed by all the tribes.
In a massive effort to stem the tide of progress of the white man, Tecumseh tried a grand unification of the tribes from Florida to form the Great Lakes. He has traveled many miles wining supporters. While on his travels, the message reached him that the Prophet was involved in a conflict with Harrison in Indiana. The Battle of Tippecanoe led to the defeat of the Indians and the end of the grand plan of Tecumseh.
Also hoping to check the advanceTecumseh and his followers joined the British in Canada during the War of 1812 against the Americans. It 'was given to Brigadier General. In the general's uniform, led his troops against the Americans. Once again the Indians and the British were forced to retreat. On October 5, 1813 at the Battle of the River Thames near Chatham, Ontario, Tecumseh made his last stand. Before leading his men into battle, the valiant warrior again attracted the battle dress of her tribe. The American publicHarrison defeated the British and Tecumseh was killed in the fighting.
